Analogue vs. Digital

Much the same as the old analogue TV stations and the newer digital stations, the era of analogue CCTV cameras is coming to an end. Digital camera technology is the future of CCTV and as a result, there are two types of CCTV systems. Recorders - NVR (the digital "Network Video Recorder") and DVR (the analogue, ironically named, "Digital Video Recorder); and two types of cameras.

Recording stations ‰ÛÒ DVR Vs NVR

CCTV systems are managed through a recording network, much like your home computer network. After installation, each camera sends a certain amount of data/information through the cabling (analogue utilises the RG59 coax, much the same as your TV antenna cable, and the digital systems utilise a computer network cable) to the recording station. A multitude of configurables have an impact on how much data is sent from the camera; but the recording station is restricted by how much data/information, and subsequently resolution, it can receive or record at.

Maximum recording resolution ‰ÛÒ if you only take in one point from this page, read this!

Resolution is the number of vertical by horizontal pixels that a recording station can record a camera ‰ÛÒ the higher the resolution, the more detailed the picture. One common example of this is your computer‰Ûªs VGA resolution, which is 640ÌÑ480 pixels. Megapixel cameras provide high resolutions of at least 1280ÌÑ960 pixels and are used for applications that require the ability to see fine details or cover a large area.

The digital camera is based on the MP (megapixel) technology that has been used in phone and handheld cameras for some time now. Instead of running at the traditional TVL measurement, IP cameras use the megapixel format to present the image to the recording station (NVR) for recording. The majority of digital cameras come in a 1.3, 2, 3 and 5MP solutions ‰ÛÒ they do have the ability to go higher than 5 MP, but it‰Ûªs not a proven technology yet.

Analogue Surveillance Cameras

TVL (or Television Lines): TVL is a number you typically see on Analogue cameras, and it tells you the resolution of a given camera. Some CCTV cameras may have resolutions as low as 420 TVL, while others may range up in the 600-700 TVL area. Naturally, the higher the number, the more clear and crisp the resolution and picture will be. This spec is one of the most important things to consider when picking the right camera and conducting an installation.

Here at iCam, we offer a minimum specification of 700TVL to ensure that all of our clients receive a quality end-picture and exceptional installation. Some of the cheaper brands offer a 420TVL where a person‰Ûªs face would not be recognisable at a 5 metre range.

Economy 4 kit solutions

Local stores like JayCar/JB HiFi and some on line retailers sell cheap CCTV camera packages. Is there a catch?

Quite a lot of places sell these 4 Camera CCTV kit solutions these days. The issue is that these DIY kits sometimes don‰Ûªt even tell you what resolution these cameras are. They also have bad chipsets that show little or no colour and their night vision is non-existent.

We do sell the more budget conscious ‰ÛÏ4 Camera box‰Û solutions but we only deal with the minimum 700TVL solutions that we have tested for colour and night vision quality.

This ensures that you don‰Ûªt purchase a system that provides poor quality images which are unable to be used by police if an incident occurs, which unfortunately is very common with budget DVRs.

The quality and reliability of DVRs is of the upmost importance as DVRs are very hard working devices recording images of your home 24-hours a day on to a hard disc drive. All iCam Security installed DVRs utilise high quality hard disc drives that will provide long term reliability.
